Root Canal Treatment
in Canary Wharf
Root canal treatment (endodontics) is the treatment of diseased or injured dental pulp — the network of nerves and blood vessels at the centre of your tooth. It preserves your natural tooth, eliminates infection, and relieves pain. Carried out under local anaesthetic, it is far more comfortable than most patients expect.
Root Canal Therapy Explained
Root canal treatment is designed to prevent infection from spreading and preserve as much of the natural tooth as possible — avoiding extraction entirely.
Using specialist endodontic instruments, the infected pulp is carefully removed and the root canal system thoroughly cleaned of all bacteria. The sterilised canal is then filled with a special material and permanently sealed. The tooth is saved, the infection is eliminated, and you're free from pain.
Root canal treatment is an effective, long-lasting alternative to tooth extraction — and with modern techniques, the procedure is straightforward and pain-free under local anaesthetic.

Root canal treatment is carried out under local anaesthetic, so you won't feel any pain during the procedure. In fact, the treatment relieves the toothache caused by the infection. Once the root canal has been sealed, you'll no longer experience that pain and will be able to eat, talk, and smile comfortably. Any tenderness afterwards is typically mild and manageable with over-the-counter pain relief.
The pulp is the soft tissue at the centre of your tooth, sitting inside the pulp chamber and extending down into the root canals. It contains the tooth's nerve endings and blood vessels. When the pulp becomes infected or damaged, it can cause significant pain and, if left untreated, lead to abscess and spread of infection into the surrounding bone.
The most common causes of pulp infection are:
- Severe tooth decay that has reached the centre of the tooth
- A crack or fracture in the tooth allowing bacteria in
- Trauma or injury to the tooth
- A leaking or failed filling allowing bacteria to penetrate
The toothache you were experiencing will subside once the infection is removed. Some mild tenderness around the treated tooth for a day or two is normal and can be managed with paracetamol or ibuprofen. Your dentist may prescribe antibiotics if there was significant infection. You should be able to return to normal activities the same day, though we recommend avoiding hard or crunchy foods on that side until the tooth is fully restored.
