Airflow Polish
in Canary Wharf
Airflow tooth polishing is a modern, highly effective technique for removing plaque, staining, and tartar — including from hard-to-reach areas between the teeth and below the gum line where traditional cleaning falls short.
What Does Airflow Polish Feel Like?
Airflow polishing uses a precise mix of compressed air, water, and a fine sodium bicarbonate powder to clean the tooth surface — more or less exactly what it sounds like. Patients generally describe it as feeling like a gentle stream of air directed across the teeth.
Most find it significantly more comfortable than drill-based cleaning techniques. The air jet can cause a little sensitivity during the procedure, particularly around more exposed areas — but this is temporary and typically resolves as soon as treatment is complete.
The whole appointment usually takes just 20–30 minutes, depending on the amount of build-up present — considerably faster than a traditional scale and polish.

Are There Any Limitations?
Airflow is highly effective for the vast majority of patients — particularly for removing surface staining, plaque around the gum line, and build-up around dental implants, bridges, and other prosthetics that can be difficult to clean conventionally.
Like any dental procedure, its suitability depends on your individual circumstances.
Airflow is not recommended for treating deep cavities or decay that has formed between teeth — where hard enamel needs to be removed to access the decay, a different approach will be needed. Our team will always advise on the most appropriate treatment for your situation.
After treatment, we'll give you clear guidance on how to maintain your results at home and prevent staining from returning as quickly.

Compared to traditional scale and polish and home-based dental hygiene, Airflow offers more effective cleaning between the teeth and below the gum line. It removes staining caused by tea, coffee, red wine, and tobacco more thoroughly and with less discomfort. It is also highly effective for removing plaque build-up around prosthetics such as dental implants and bridges — areas where conventional cleaning often falls short.
Your teeth and mouth should feel noticeably fresh and clean. You may also find that your teeth feel smoother against your tongue — this is because the removal of plaque and tartar changes the surface texture of the teeth. It's important to maintain good oral hygiene afterwards to keep them that way: regular brushing and flossing, avoiding prolonged contact with staining foods and drinks, and booking a follow-up hygiene visit every six months.
Treatment typically takes around 20–30 minutes depending on the amount of plaque and staining present. This is considerably faster than a traditional scale and polish for most patients. You can return to normal activities immediately afterwards.
Results are often very impressive immediately after treatment — teeth appear noticeably cleaner and brighter. However, staining can return over time, particularly with regular consumption of tea, coffee, red wine, or tobacco. To maintain results, brush twice daily, floss regularly, and visit us every six months for a hygiene check-up. Brushing after consuming staining foods or drinks helps significantly in slowing the return of surface discolouration.
